On June 28, 2025, a significant consecration took place in the imposing Dresden Cathedral: Bishop Heinrich Timmerevers presented Karim-Habib Gehrmann the diaconate. This step not only marks the beginning of a new chapter for Gehrmann, but also an important milestone on the way to ordination.

Karim-Habib Gehrmann, born in 1997 and born in Berlin, was actively involved in the church at a young age. His path began in his parish of Mariä Himmelfahrt in Schirgiswalde, which led him through the youth group in Wilthen to the management of the altar server group in Oppach. His commitment also extends to the level of the deanery and the diocese, where he is active as a spokesman in the diocese helpers. After completing his apprenticeship as an educator, Gehrmann went through the propaedeuticism in Bamberg and is currently studying Catholic theology at the St. Lambert study house in Lantershofen.

the consecration and its meaning

The consecration of the deacon itself is carried out by the bishop's hand, combined with a consecration - a ritual act that gives Gehrmann into the community of deacons. This inauguration is not only a formal act, but also forms the framework for the diaconal life, in which Gehrmann is to work as "eyes, ears, mouth and hand of the church", as Bishop Timmerevers put it. The consecration brings special tasks that Gehrmann will now take over in the parish of Holy Mother Teresa in Chemnitz.

. These tasks illustrate the role of the deacon, which serves to the people of God in liturgy, word and love activity. Diacons are active in both church and social context - they in particular support people on the edge of society and bring their concerns to the services. As a sign of his new role, Gehrmann will create the liturgical robes - stole and dalmatics - and be given the gospel.

The way to the diaconate

The step into the constant diaconate is a serious decision for many men. According to diakonat.at applicants, whether married or single, are checked for various criteria while you clarify your calling. Unmarried people must be at least 25 years old, while married candidates must be at least 35 years old and the approval of their wife is necessary.

The training as a deacon includes extensive theological and practical aspects: a one -year propaedeuticism, followed by three -year recesses in various areas such as communication, liturgical education and pastoral training. The suitability for diaconate requires a committed life of faith, health and teamwork, coupled with the will to actively participate in the parish.

After the solemn consecration, numerous guests gathered in the house of the cathedral to congratulate Gehrmann and to wish him all the best for his upcoming tasks. His path is borne by the hope that he can accompany people with a good hand and a lot of compassion, who urgently need support and help.
