Plauen is applying for Day of Saxony 2027 – A festival of opportunities!
The city of Plauen has big plans – and these could soon become reality. This week the city's city council decided to apply to host the “Day of the Saxons” in 2027. With 26 yes votes, 12 no votes and one abstention, the decision was clear. Mayor Steffen Zenner from the CDU sees this as an excellent opportunity not only to present Plauen positively, but also to provide economic stimulus and strengthen social cohesion.
Plauen hosted the “Day of the Saxons” back in 1997, and it was a great success: around 380,000 people attended the celebrations back then. Even today, the city is in an excellent position to attract many visitors again. A project team will now take over the preparations for the application. The final decision on the hosting city is expected to be made in December 2023, so the anticipation of a possible festival could soon be felt. This information provides MDR.
A look at the celebrations
The “Day of the Saxons” is the largest folk and local festival in the Free State of Saxony and has been taking place in different cities on the first weekend in September since 1992. In recent years, some festivals have had to be canceled for various reasons: the 2002 festival was canceled due to flooding in Döbeln, and the 2020 and 2021 events were canceled due to the corona pandemic. No festival could take place in 2022 or 2024 either, which only increases the anticipation for the upcoming events. Loud Wikipedia This year Sebnitz hosted the event in 2025 under the motto “Here’s to blooming experiences!” will align.
The “Day of the Saxons” has developed over the years into an important social event that is not only about celebratory parades, but also about the coexistence of tradition and modernity. In recent years, for example, mascots have been designed to accompany the festivities. And collectors don't miss out either: an official medal has been issued in various materials since 1992, the acquisition of which has now become a tradition in its own right.
What's coming up?
Mayor Zenner hopes that Plauen's application can boost both local retail and catering. The city reports that the event could also create numerous jobs. The city does not want to miss this opportunity to put Plauen in the right light and benefit economically.
With a project team in the starting blocks and a clear vision, Plauen is optimistic about the decision in December. The response is increased and the preparers are ready to meet any challenge.
It remains to be seen whether Plauen will actually receive the alignment. If this were to happen, it would be a new high point in the history of the city and the “Day of the Saxons”. Stay tuned for the latest developments! Further information can be found at n-tv.
