Storm warning for Saxony: squalls, snow and thunderstorms await us!
October 27, 2025 will bring stormy and uncomfortable autumn weather to Saxony, which will keep many people in the region on their toes. A low pressure area over Scandinavia is causing changeable weather with heavy rain, sleet and even thunderstorms next Monday. The weather service informs that temperatures in Saxony reach a maximum of 11 degrees, although it is significantly colder at higher altitudes. The first snowfalls have already occurred, particularly in the Erzgebirge and the Thuringian Forest, with up to 2 cm of snow measured on the Fichtelberg and the Rennsteig covered with 4 cm of snow.
Anyone planning to go outside on Monday should be prepared for strong, sometimes stormy gusts. Particular attention should be paid to the Vogtland and the Erzgebirge, where gusts of up to 80 km/h will be possible. Extreme gusts of up to 100 km/h must be expected on the Fichtelberg. The German Weather Service has announced a weather warning for the next few hours, which will be updated on Monday at 10:30 a.m. Such stormy weather will continue to be an issue into the evening, while the winds will ease somewhat as the evening progresses, but the stormy gusts will continue in the higher mountain areas.
Thunderstorms and lightning hazard
The changeable weather is also associated with thunderstorms, which can erupt briefly and violently. In addition to heavy rain, these thunderstorms also bring with them gusts of up to 80 km/h. The risk of lightning strikes is increased during these thunderstorms. Lightning is caused by the discharge of electrical energy in the clouds and can occur both within the clouds and between clouds and the ground. Around 50 to 100 lightning strikes are active every second around the world, and the fear of a lightning strike is not unfounded, considering that they can reach a temperature of up to 30,000 °C.
When air pressure conditions are as opaque as they are right now, it is advisable to exercise caution. It is particularly important during thunderstorms to seek shelter and stay away from open windows, doors and electrical devices. Watch the weather and stay safe: Monday could be an uncomfortable challenge.
To make decisions about outdoor activities in the coming days, it makes sense to regularly follow the weather reports. The weather service's next update will be on Monday evening at 8:30 p.m., although weather conditions could change again. So be prepared!
