Schocken department store in Zwickau: Grand opening on September 22nd!

The former “Schocken Department Store” in Zwickau is looking forward to its reopening. After three and a half years of intensive renovation work, the preparations are almost complete. On September 22nd at 10 a.m., the listed building will finally open its doors again Radio Zwickau reported.

The extensive revitalization of the unique building, which has been largely empty since 1999, was carried out by GP Papenburg Hochbau GmbH, a subsidiary of GP Günter Papenburg AG. With a total investment volume of 33 million euros, supported by funding of six million euros from the federal government and the city of Zwickau, the building should not only shine in new splendor, but also make a significant contribution to revitalizing the main street.

History and future use

The department store was opened in 1901, but its use as a department store ended in 1999. Since then, the structural condition of the historic building has deteriorated significantly. In order to counteract this circumstance, the renovation was started as a significant project in Zwickau. In addition to a REWE store, which will open on September 18th, the new uses also include offices for the city administration and a B&B hotel with around 90 guest rooms.

The construction measures included, among other things, the preservation of the substance and numerous historical and component-specific investigations, which are essential in order to meet the monument protection requirements. Such projects are not only a challenge, but also an enrichment for the city BPD Leipzig explained. Historic buildings are cultural assets that contribute significantly to the identity of cities and often also promote tourism.

Opening ceremony and guided tours

The official opening event will feature greetings from Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer and Zwickau's Mayor Constance Arndt. There will also be guided tours of the renovated property, giving citizens the opportunity to get to know the converted rooms and appreciate their historical significance.

The redesign of the old department store represents a step into the future. Its future use as a contemporary place to live, work and trade will help to increase the quality of life in the region and preserve the historic cityscape of Zwickau. Those responsible have a good knack for designing the new living space, and there is great anticipation for the opening. The Schocken department store will not only be restored, but will also be brought to life and integrated into modern urban development.
