Sensation on Cathedral Square: 50,000 people celebrating at top concerts!

On July 11, 2025, Erfurt Cathedral Square will be transformed into a pulsating festival mile full of music and a good atmosphere. This year, four big stars: Sido, Clueso, Andreas Gabalier and Roland Kaiser are ensuring sold-out concerts that attract over 50,000 fans. The anticipation is palpable, not only on the concert site itself, but also in the surrounding restaurants, which are very busy on the concert evenings. Reservations are almost a must to get a spot. The atmosphere is simply unique and makes it clear that the summer concerts on Domplatz have become a premium brand in the rock and pop music world, like MDR reported.

Despite the big celebrations, there are always critical voices about the impact of the concerts on the environment. There are repeated reports of rubbish and damage to the grass areas on Petersberg, where many fans watch the concerts from an elevated position. As an initial reaction, the city of Erfurt set up additional waste containers last year, which were remarkably well received, the city administration reports in a press release. Jörg Lummitsch, head of the Environment and Nature Conservation Office, emphasizes the importance of the help of visitors who dispose of their waste in the containers provided or simply take it home.

Challenges and solutions

In order to cope with the challenges surrounding the major events, the city is planning to seal off the forest that separates the square from the surrounding area again this year. This measure has proven extremely beneficial over the past year. The city appeals to visitors not to enter the newly sown areas in the trail areas; You don't want to jeopardize the success of the greening measures. Such precautions are particularly important given the large number of concert-goers flocking to the city.

Erfurt's cultural manager Christian Hass emphasizes that the concerts not only represent a cultural enrichment, but also have a positive economic impact on the city. The hotels are fully booked during the concert weekends. This shows that the effort has been invested in the infrastructure. The city reports that contracts for next year have already been concluded, even if the artists have not yet been named.

A highlight of consumer culture

It's no secret that concerts and festivals are very popular. According to an analysis, around 16 percent of concert and festival visitors in Germany regularly attend events. A third of them are single people and around a fifth come from larger cities. This target group has a strong environmental awareness and pays more attention to quality than to price, as Statista shows. So it's no wonder that the events in Erfurt also revitalize the local consumer culture.

What cannot be overlooked on the evenings of the summer concerts, however, is the special flair of the cathedral square, which is the reason for many visitors to return regularly. Even if there are occasional noise complaints from residents, this is usually seen as unavoidable in the context of the big festival and the joy it brings with it. After all, Cathedral Square is not just a concert backdrop, but a place that connects people and gives them unforgettable experiences.
