Honor and support: Gera celebrates firefighter heroes in the town hall!

On September 26, 2025, a solemn event was announced in the town hall hall of the city of Gera: the honor and promotion of numerous firefighters. At the event, Mayor Kurt Dannenberg and head of office Thilo Schütz were present, who thanked the firefighters for their extraordinary performance. The event not only offered space for recognition, but also for the importance, the team spirit and reliability in the fire brigade, as Thilo Schütz emphasized.

Nine fire champion candidates were able to look forward to documents, which they received after successfully completing their six -month basic training. Her training goes hand in hand with what a fire brigade in Germany is: the commitment to the security of the citizens. Of the 23,297 voluntary fire brigades in the country and the over 35,000 members in professional fire brigades, this path is essential to maintain our security system, which includes fires, rescue operations and technical help in an emergency, reports NDR.de.

Appointments and promotions

The highlight of the event was the appointment of ten civil servants to trial, which had successfully completed the 18-month career training for the middle fire service. In addition, four relatives were promoted to higher offices, and a colleague was even appointed for life. This shows that the career paths within the fire brigade are very promising and the commitment to the community is worthwhile.

As the reporting on studiogera.de shows, the training of a firefighter should not be underestimated. Four new candidates will start their intensive 18-month career training to become fire chiefs on October 1, 2024. Part of this training includes basic firefighting training as well as technical training and various internships that provide future helpers with all the necessary knowledge in an emergency situation.

The volunteer fire department

Firefighters make their contribution not only in uniform, but often also part -time. They have "normal" professions and still find themselves in operational challenges as soon as alarm arises. The engagement in the volunteer fire brigade enables a strong sense of community, diverse responsibilities and the possibility of personal development. However, participation also requires a certain level of understanding of family and employers, since they have to be released in operations and courses, as the NDR.de guide explains.

The fire brigades are usually financed by the city or municipality, while the training and personal equipment are borne by the fire brigades themselves. These are important points to keep in mind when accessing the volunteer fire department. There are a variety of options for those interested, with a minimum age of 18 and physical and mental fitness being required.

All in all, honors, promotions and ongoing training make it clear: the fire brigade is and remains an indispensable part of our society. It connects people and saves life. So if you think about a commitment to the fire brigade, you have numerous options in Gera, be it in the professional fire brigade or as part of one of the many volunteers.
