Colorful! Loud! Combative! – Jena united against the threat to democracy
On August 29th, the theater forecourt in Jena will be the venue for the second open-air event "Colourful! Loud! Combative!". The event, which is organized by an alliance of local clubs such as KuBa, Kassablanca, Café Wagner, Rosenkeller, Med-Club, Trafo and F-Haus as well as civil society, aims to strengthen the networking of civil society initiatives and bring committed citizens together. This initiative comes at a time when social and political challenges are increasing in Thuringia, a barometer for the state of democracy in Germany. The AfD has just become the strongest force in Thuringia in the last election, which underlines the need for such events. JenaTV reports that the event aims to provide local responses to global threats to democracy and diversity.
What can visitors expect? The organization has put together a varied program that includes, among other things, concerts, speeches and information stands from various organizations such as ver.di, CSD Jena, Roll-Laden and Uni gegen Rechts. There will also be special activities for the younger guests. The entire event is free, making it accessible to anyone with an interest in community engagement. Wagnerverein Jena emphasizes that it is also about defending the diversity we have fought for in society.
Democracy in focus
The event “Colourful! Loud! Combative!” is a strong sign of the counterculture in Thuringia, which reacts to the increasing stress tests for democracies. Attacks on civil society and the politicization of jurisprudence go against the values that define a democratic society. The Institute for Democracy and Civil Society (IDZ) plays an important role here by dealing with the risks to democratic culture and acting as a place for social research. IDZ Jena was founded in 2016 to close knowledge gaps about anti-democratic movements and strengthen democracy in Thuringia and beyond.
The open-air event not only sets an example, but also actively promotes strengthening personal commitment. It is an opportunity to exchange ideas, talk to each other and show that the commitment to democracy and diversity remains alive in society. On August 29th, the theater forecourt will become a place for encounters, learning and reflection in view of the challenges that currently concern us.
