Chlorine dosage in Jena: Drinking water with a chlorine smell from now on!

On August 15, 2025, the Thuringian long-distance water supply will inform the city of JenaWasser about an important measure for drinking water safety. The chlorine dosage was put into operation in the elevated tank in Remderoda and affects around 11,000 households in various districts and communities. Particularly in the districts of Jena-Süd, Jena-West, Münchenroda/Remderoda and in the surrounding communities such as Lehesten and Bucha, a typical chlorine smell and taste can be noticed in the drinking water.

What does this mean for the citizens affected? Luckily, you can use your drinking water as usual without boiling it. The dosage of 0.2 mg/l corresponds to the guidelines of the Drinking Water Ordinance and represents a common disinfection process that is harmless to health. This measure was ordered due to microbiological abnormalities during control samples and is the responsibility of the Jena City Health Department.
