Insolvency drama in Harzgerode: Bohai Trimet fights for rescue!

It is a sad chapter for the Harzgerode region, because Bohai Trimet Automotive Holding GmbH has come into bankruptcy. As the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported, the insolvency proceedings were opened by the Halle District Court (Saale). The company, which produces gearbox, chassis and body parts for car manufacturers in Germany and Italy, had already filed for bankruptcy in April what applies to all four companies in the company.

The situation is particularly worrying because Bohai Trimet is the largest employer in the region and thus has a massive impact on the economic structure. According to the company, 580 and 98 people were employed in the Harzgerode 580 and in Sömmerda. Around 500 additional jobs in the area hang directly on the production of Bohai Trimet. The news about bankruptcy triggered a shock throughout the region.

challenges through change and costs

"The switch to e-mobility and the high energy costs have contributed significantly to the difficult situation of the company," explains Managing Director Damuszis. However, he sees potential for the Harzgerode location. The city has also stood behind the company. Mayor Marcus Weise (CDU) emphasized that the city would do anything to support the bankruptcy proceedings. "We are 100 percent behind our employees," says Weise Weise. In discussions with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Economy, support from the state of Saxony-Anhalt was signaled.

The emotional pressure on employees and their families is enormous, because many institutions, including schools and kindergartens, are heavily dependent on this industrial company. The city sees the need to stay active and not to fall into lethargy to find a solution. This is particularly challenged by the company's employees who are in an insecure location.

an industry in the crisis

The situation for the automotive industry in general does not look rosy. As the Automobile Industry 2024 for 69 of the 100 largest automotive suppliers a crisis year, which also affects Bohai Trimet. The turnover of the top 100 suppliers fell by 4.6%, and in particular the lack of demand for electric cars is seen as the main cause of sales problems.

The insolvency administrators, however, provide a glimmer of hope: the company was resumed quickly, and the production at the locations in Harzgerode and Sömmerda is again fully run. The salaries are now being brought up again, and initial discussions with potential investors have already taken place. Olaf Spiekermann, the insolvency administrator, describes this process as lengthy, but is optimistic.

It remains to be seen whether the conversations with investors will have fruits. The region is dependent on the solutions that could result from these negotiations. At a time when the industry is changing, a good hand could be crucial for the economy in the Harz Mountains.
