GDR two-wheeler meeting impresses with over 2,800 euros in moped treasures!

A fascinating revival of GDR two-wheelers recently took place at the third GDR two-wheeler meeting in Schlagsdorf. Hundreds of nostalgic fans came together to celebrate their love for the historic machines. This special event shows that the passion for two-wheelers from the GDR is alive like never before.

GDR two-wheelers have experienced a true renaissance in recent years. There are currently more GDR mopeds registered in Germany than ever before, which is a clear sign of their continued popularity. Dominik Borchert from Lübeck, for example, has an impressive collection of 14 GDR two-wheelers, including a Habicht from 1972, for which he paid an impressive 2,800 euros. Such prices testify to the high demand and the special charm of these vehicles.

Nostalgia and technology

The German Democratic Republic (GDR), which existed from 1949 to 1990, developed its own vehicle industry, particularly with mopeds like the Samson was formative. This company was the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the GDR and produced popular models such as the famous Schwalbe and the sporty S50 between 1955 and 1986. From 1960 onwards, Simson concentrated exclusively on the production of mopeds, which lasted until production finally ceased in 2003.

What is particularly remarkable is that Simson built a total of almost six million motorcycles. The Schwalbe, one of the most popular retro models, was created and has now achieved cult status, even in the West. Popular vehicles such as the Schwalbe and the Star continue to enjoy great popularity, leading many classic car enthusiasts to restore the old machines and take them out on the roads.

The renovation and the community

Julian Schramm from Rehna, a passionate motocross rider, has discovered his S50B not only as a means of transportation, but also as a source of entertainment. Taylor Jentze from Schlagsdorf also worked intensively on his moped and converted it into a retro style. He enjoyed his modification with a sports exhaust and a different cylinder.

Organizer Thomas Wischnewski draws a positive conclusion from the event and is already thinking about a larger area for the next meeting. The community of GDR two-wheeler enthusiasts is constantly growing, and spare parts for the classic cars are now being produced again. One thing is clear: the fascination with GDR mopeds seems unbroken and is valued by many as part of their cultural heritage.

It is a true holiday for everyone who appreciates the story of Samson and Co. The annual Simson Day on July 19th, which honors the history of this brand, also underlines the lasting importance of these motorcycles and mopeds for many people in Germany.
