New Aldi store in Zella-Mehlis: modernization started today!

Something is happening in Thuringia: The Aldi discount store in Zella-Mehlis is being rebuilt, and at first glance it looks like a comprehensive modernization. Construction work has recently begun on a well-known parking lot where the old building currently stands. The paving stones have already been removed and initial construction work indicates a larger project. Aldi is moving out of the basement of the A71 Center because the old building no longer meets modern requirements.

The new building is not just a simple update, but part of a broader modernization strategy by Aldi Nord, which aims to significantly improve shopping opportunities in Zella-Mehlis. The new store will offer a sales area of 1,040 square meters and focuses on sustainability and energy efficiency. A photovoltaic system, energy-saving LED lighting and a heat recovery system are planned. These measures could not be implemented in the previous building, which is why the new building was unavoidable.

Dispute over the development plan

But not everything goes smoothly. The local press reports on a dispute between Suhl and Zella-Mehlis, which revolves around the development plan for the A71 Center. Suhl has complained that the expansion of the retail park could endanger the city center. A compromise stipulates that no new food stores may be built in the basement and that important product ranges that are relevant to Suhl should not be offered. This regulation results in an increase in sales area by 1,100 square meters.

Construction work is already progressing and the progress on the construction site is clearly visible. Aldi plans to open the new store by the first quarter of next year, which will significantly enrich the shopping landscape in Zella-Mehlis.

Aldi Nord's expansion strategy

While great progress is being made in Zella-Mehlis, Aldi Nord is already pursuing a broader expansion strategy throughout Germany, especially in Dresden. Seven new locations were opened between 2020 and 2024. The aim of this strategy is to open up new locations and bring existing markets into shape. This can be seen, for example, in a new Aldi store on Prager Straße with a sales area of around 500 square meters and an opening in Dresden-Löbtau with 800 square meters in October 2024.

Andreas Marx, Aldi's head of real estate and expansion, announces new locations for 2025, including demolition and new construction projects. These adjustments are necessary to keep up with changing shopping habits and underline the trend that Aldi wants to rely on wooden construction in the coming years. This design is considered both cost-effective and time-saving, as a prototype has already been successfully implemented in Gelsenkirchen.

Overall, it can be said that this new building for Zella-Mehlis promises both practical and aesthetic improvements and that Aldi Nord is responding to the needs of its customers with its progressive expansion strategy. We are excited to see how the project develops!
