Suhl in the Olympic concept: shooting sports center becomes an urban highlight!
The sports country of Germany is on the move: as part of the application for the 2036 Summer Olympics The city of Hamburg has now also made Suhl an integral part of the concept for shooting competitions. The former home of the German riflemen has established itself as a tried and tested and popular venue for over 50 years. Mayor André Knapp emphasizes how important Suhl as a shooting sports location is for Germany and beyond. This strategy could help the city gain international recognition and further investment.
The shooting range on the Friedberg in Suhl is already anchored in the Hanseatic city's Olympic concept and is listed as a suitable venue for various disciplines. As the MDR reports, Hamburg is planning an application that focuses not only on the competition itself, but also on sustainability and short distances. The majority of the planned sports facilities are already located within a radius of just seven kilometers.
Joint application and outlook
Hamburg is not alone. In addition to the Hanseatic city, Berlin, Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region are also interested in a joint application. Next year, Hamburg's citizens will vote on the project, which aims to organize Olympic competitions in a sustainable manner using the “Hamburg+” concept. In southern Thuringia emphasizes that a successful application would not only be an advantage for Hamburg, but also for Suhl, as the Olympic stage opens up the opportunity to fundamentally modernize the shooting sports facility.
In connection with these plans, future competition years are also being discussed. The possible years are 2036, 2040 or 2044. Given the economic situation of the Olympics, interest in many cities around the world is increasing. Several countries have already expressed their ambitions, including host candidates such as India, Istanbul and South Africa.
A look into the future
The 2036 Olympic Games promise to offer a spectrum of topics ranging from classic sports to innovative approaches. Given the current plans, including the possibility of temporary sports facilities similar to those in Paris, it is clear that there is great potential for the region and sport as a whole.
However, it is not just the cities that are required to realize the project. Decisive discussions with the IOC and the wider population are necessary to create common ground. Suhl is in a good position here with its history and experience in shooting sports and, with the right support, could play an important role in the upcoming Olympic events.
