Leipzig celebrates Jewish Week: Experience culture and memories!

Things are going colorful in Leipzig this week as the city celebrates the 16th Jewish Week. From June 15th to 22nd, visitors are invited to discover Jewish culture in many different facets. The event is an initiative of the Cultural Office of the City of Leipzig and the cultural and meeting center Ariowitsch-Haus e. V. A special highlight is the variety of program items, including concerts, readings, contemporary witness discussions as well as city tours and theater performances.

The panel discussion “Torn from Forgetting. Jewish Portraits from the Mittelmann Photo Archive in Leipzig,” which will take place on June 19th in the Grassi Museum of Ethnology, will be particularly exciting. This highlights the history of the Jewish community in Leipzig, which has been deeply anchored in the city's culture for centuries. This is also reflected in the wide range of activities, from exhibitions to dance performances. MDR emphasizes that events like this not only reflect the contemporary life of Jews in Germany, but also their historical roots.

Cultural highlights of the Jewish Week

The Jewish Week in Leipzig presents works and stories that are deeply rooted in Jewish history. Under the motto “Discovering Jewish life”, visitors can take part in events that deal with everyday life as well as holidays and contemporary art. The challenges that the Jewish community in Germany was historically confronted with are also discussed. Loud National Geographic Judaism is one of the five major world religions and has a deep history that is still alive.

The Jewish Week in Leipzig is therefore not only a cultural celebration, but also an opportunity to honor the diversity of Jewish life. The exchange of memories and traditions is celebrated throughout the city, which further strengthens interest in Jewish culture. The highlight of the week is certainly reached on July 21st, when the Festival of Music (Fête de la musique) is celebrated in many cities.

More exciting events

At the same time, an exhibition about the famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen is being shown in Weimar. In two renowned exhibition locations – Tiefurt Castle and the Kirms-Krackow-Haus – visitors can immerse themselves in the world of fairy tales. Picture books, drawings and artistic paper pictures are presented there. MDR reports on the large number of exhibits that impressively showcase Andersen's creative power.

In Magdeburg, on the other hand, the Festival of Music begins on July 21st, with music taking place in parks, squares and throughout the city and the best thing about it: everything is free! The festival attracts many people and promotes the joy of music and culture - a perfect complement to the cultural inspiration week in Leipzig.
