Homecoming exhibition: Remembering and understanding in Frankfurt (Oder)
Frankfurt (Oder) is a place with an eventful history that was of enormous importance, especially between 1945 and 1950. During this period, more than 1.5 million German prisoners of war, interned civilians and political prisoners were released here. These events have left deep traces and are a central theme of the current exhibition “Welcome to Home,” which can be seen in the Hornkaserne, now the East Police Department. As frankfurt-oder.de reports, many people died in this departure and their graves can be found in Frankfurt.
The exhibition, which deals intensively with this moving chapter of the city's history, not only offers insights into the past, but also the opportunity to deal with this topic. A guided tour of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, October 9, 2025. This lasts from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and costs just 2.00 euros per person. The tour is limited to a number of 20 to 25 people, which is why registration is recommended. Anyone interested can register by phone on 0335 40 15 62 9 or by email at anmelde@museum-viadrina.de. Thematic press inquiries can be sent to Dr. Karl-Konrad Tschäpe, also by email to Karl-Konrad.Tschaepe@museum-viadrina.de.
Insight into the past
The importance of Frankfurt (Oder) as a discharge location cannot be overestimated. Thousands of people had to fight for their survival during this difficult time. The exhibition “Welcome to Home” deals intensively with the fate of those returning home. However, this will only be on display until the beginning of 2026 and should therefore definitely not be missed, as the event on frankfurt-slubice.eu underlines.
The tours through the exhibition offer a deep insight into the fate of those affected and the challenges they had to face after their release. Frankfurt played a central role for the returnees during this time, and the exhibition helps to raise awareness of this historical episode.
The address given for the event is Nuhnenstrasse 40. There, in the former barracks area, visitors can look forward to an informative and moving tour through the history of the returnees. Registration is accepted daily from Tuesday to Sunday between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
So if you are interested in history and want to know the fate behind the numbers, you should definitely secure a place on the tour. It is a valuable opportunity to engage with Frankfurt's history in a personal way.
