Rostock sea port boom: urgently needed new areas for growth!

In the Rostock seaport, a lot is happening: With a remarkable half -year balance sheet, the port presents itself as an emerging location that has been recording record envelopes for years. Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of Rostock Port, emphasizes the economic importance of the port. In his opinion, the future of the port is shaped not only by growing goods handling, but also by targeted investments in the infrastructure. Nordkurier reports that Rostock Port plans to put several 100 million euros into the expansion of the port area.

A central problem, however, is the shortage of space. According to Jens A. Scharner, Managing Director of Rostock Port, the demand for space near the portfolio exceeds the existing supply. With a view to the future, development plans and usage examinations are currently being prepared for the last larger areas in the special area.

sustainable development and ports in change

The Rostock port has set itself the goal of becoming a future port for goods handling and sustainable energy supply. The current port areas and planned expansion areas are drawn on one card. Area 34, one of the last larger undeveloped areas in the special area, is particularly exciting, which is currently being developed by a development plan by the city of Rostock. The Rathaus Rostock informs about the plans for the port of the East and West port, which have already been awarded in the regional spatial development program as "reserved areas".

The future orientation of the Rostock port aims to implement the blue "priority areas" despite the environmental and nature conservation matters. Clarity was also created for other uses, such as residential development: these are excluded in the designated areas. In addition, the new berth 5 is being worked on, which is supposed to play a decisive role in the care of the PCK refinery in Schwedt and thus contributes to the energy independence of Russia.

innovative projects and financial support

A special focus is on the EU funding project Harbor, which is intended to improve the maritime traffic connection between Rostock and the Finnish port of Hanko. This project extends over the years 2025 to 2027 and requires a total of almost 14 million euros, of which half is funded by the EU. This is a clear step towards modern and efficient port operation that is supposed to expand the port handling capacities.

In addition, a new deep water base in the eastern Rostock oil port is planned. The building permit for this is to be requested in 2026. As part of these innovations, the upgrading of existing berths, which goes hand in hand with investments of almost 20 million euros and includes the new buildings of the berths 33 and 34.

In a larger context, Rostock with his plans of port development meets similar challenges as the great sister city of Hamburg. Hamburg Port Authority reports of a port development plan 2040, which has been determined by important strategic guidelines since June 13, 2023. The developments in both cities show that there is a lot to do to make the port industry in Germany future -proof.
