Battery trains roll between Schwerin and Parchim from 2027!
Schwerin, Deutschland - A new windy approach in mobility comes up to us! The East German railway company (ODEG) is planning to introduce 14 battery-operated trains in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from the end of 2027. These should not only improve the travel experience of passengers in an environmentally friendly manner. On July 14th, a first special trip from Schwerin to Parchim took place, in which the new trains of the vehicle generation "battery flirt" were presented. The route network that will operate the trains includes exciting routes such as Rehna - Schwerin - Parchim and many others.
One of the outstanding features of these trains is the possibility of charging their batteries on routes with overhead line and in maintenance workshops. On sections without overhead line, the trains use the energy stored in their batteries. 98 seats, a barrier -free concept, multi -purpose areas and even WiFi are planned, which makes the trains particularly attractive for commuters and tourists. Ostsee-Zeitung around 11 million euros provided the expansion of the maintenance workshop in Parchim.

The maintenance workshop will be expanded for a total of 18 million euros. With the new facilities, qualified jobs in the region are also to be created and secured. In addition to the workshop hall, additional storage areas, a washing hall and a modern charging infrastructure are planned. This comprehensive project will be implemented in combination with a transport contract until December 2040, which provides for operation with modernized diesel railcars from December 2025. From December 2027, these will then be gradually replaced by the new battery -electric multiple units.
But that's not all! Deutsche Bahn would also like to use battery trains in the local transport network Warnow II from 2026. These are used, among other things, on the Wismar-Rostock-Ticino and Bad Doberan-Rostock-Graal-Müritz. The range of these new trains is about 100 kilometers, which means that around 80 percent of the non -electrified routes can be covered in Germany. Nordkurier describes that both companies will move into their vehicles from the Stadler company.

This step towards sustainable mobility fits perfectly with the ambitious climate goals of the Deutsche Bahn, which wants to be climate -neutral by 2040. The DB already experiment with modern battery trains that can drive electrically without being completely dependent on a continuous overhead line. This not only reduces diesel traffic, but also enables emission -free driving through the use of green electricity.
The coming years promise exciting developments for rail transport in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which not only improve mobility, but will also make a valuable contribution to environmental protection. There is something and we can be curious to see how the project will develop!
