35 years of the MV Festival: Kick-off with Blomstedt and a big concert in Wismar!
What's going on in Wismar? There is music and celebration here, because... Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival are celebrating their 35th anniversary this year. On June 13, 2025, the starting signal for the three-month music summer was given with an impressive concert in the St. Georgen Church, at which the longest-serving top conductor Herbert Blomstedt, who is a proud 97 years old, was at the podium. Over 600 guests gathered in the sold-out church to hear the Elbphilharmonie Orchestra perform festive overtures as well as works by Bach and Beethoven.
During the opening weekend, visitors could also look forward to the warm words of Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, who congratulated the organizers on this remarkable anniversary. Since its first concert at the Schwerin State Theater on May 13, 1990, the festival has developed into one of the largest classical music festivals in Germany. The events attract not only classical music lovers, but also families from the region and beyond.
A colorful program until September
The 35th season of the festival offers an incredible program with a total of 136 events at 96 different venues. From manor houses to churches to parks and workshops – there is something for everyone. Particularly noteworthy are the numerous festivals and events over the course of the summer, including a small festival in the Großer Park in Ludwigslust and a festival in Hasenwinkel near Wismar. In her speech, director Ursula Haselböck emphasized the unifying power of music, which will be particularly noticeable during this festival.
An outstanding artist at this year's festival is the Russian cellist Anastasia Kobekina. As award winner in residence, she will give around 20 concerts in which she will present the entire range of cello playing, from jazz to chamber music. Kobekina, who already won the soloist prize at the festival in 2016, is an absolute asset to the program.
Top stars and special highlights
But that's not all: the festival offers other highlights. Acclaimed violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter will perform in Redefin, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Vasily Petrenko. Highlights also include an open-air concert in Bothmer Castle Park with the NDR Big Band, which offers a special program in honor of Heinz Erhardt. Unknown manuscripts are performed here and some well-known faces such as Annette Frier, Stefan Gwildis and Dietmar Bär are on stage.
An innovative format will be seen on July 5th in the Fleesensee Castle Park: a crossover concert that brings together artists such as Johannes Strate from Revolverheld, pianist Sebastian Knauer and Martin Tingvall, a jazz pianist. This is intended to blur the boundaries between classical, pop and jazz and appeal to music lovers of all kinds.
Advance sales for the selected concerts have already started and tickets are available online, by phone at 0385-5918585 and at local ticket offices. It promises to be an unforgettable summer full of music and shared experiences. Don't miss out on the musical highlights, because there's still a lot on offer until September 14th! The finale will be a concert in the Neubrandenburg Concert Church, where Anastasia Kobekina and the NDR Radiophilharmonie will perform.
