Chemnitz only received a grade of 4 in terms of cycling climate – citizens are demanding change!

In the current assessment of the cycling climate, Chemnitz received a grade of 4, which is a clear sign of a need for action. According to the recently published study by the ADFC cycling club, 81 percent of cyclists surveyed feel unsafe while riding in the city. This survey shows that the city lags far behind compared to other Saxon cities such as Dresden and Leipzig radiochemnitz.de reported.

The results regarding the traffic situation are particularly alarming: 79 percent of cyclists perceive the general mood in traffic as aggressive, and only 18 percent say that they are overtaken by cars with a sufficient distance. These factors contribute to a generally inadequate climate for cyclists in Chemnitz, which has not improved significantly in the last two years.

Bicycle climate test shows weaknesses

The bicycle climate test carried out by the ADFC aims to record the satisfaction of cyclists in Germany. As part of this test, cyclists were able to rate the bike-friendliness of their communities in a questionnaire between September and November 2024. The results, which will be published in spring 2025, are intended to support transport planners and political decision-makers in particular in improving the infrastructure for cyclists and evaluating the promotion of cycling fahrradklima-test.adfc.de.

A high number of participants is expected for this year's survey - the last test recorded around 245,000 participants. This year too, questions will be asked about safety on the bike and coexistence in traffic. The survey also serves as feedback to the cities, which can receive concrete information on how to improve their cycle path structure.

A call to participate

The ADFC calls on all cyclists to take part in the next survey. The test begins on September 1, 2024 and runs until November 30, 2024. With the help of over 27 targeted questions, each participant can contribute their experiences and perceptions. The survey is on the website adfc.de available. This feedback is crucial to improving the cycling experience in cities and strengthening cycling.

It will be interesting to see the results of the test. They could help ensure that similar problems to those identified in Chemnitz are not only visible, but also incorporated into the political discourse. After all, cycling should be fun and safe!
