Mobile chaos in Rhinow: Director Aasmann in the storm of the citizens!

In Rhinow, the planned construction of a cell phone mast is causing tension and conflict. The official director Jens Aasmann, who has been in office since 2010 and was re-elected for another term in 2018, is confronted with a supervisory complaint. This complaint was dealt with in the official committee on June 26, 2025 and goes back to the citizens' initiative (BI), which is against the construction of the over 40 meter high cell phone mast in Großderschau. However, the BI was not represented at the meetings, which made the discussion all the more tense.

A building permit had already been granted for the cell phone tower project. The BI's complaint concerns events related to community consent, which leads to skepticism among committee members. A committee member explained that this issue needed to be addressed first. The Havelland district is also involved in the matter and is examining whether Aasmann can be accused of misconduct, which could potentially have consequences for his future in office. The public meeting to further address the complaint is eagerly awaited.

Emotional discussions about cell phone towers

A central concern of the Pro Life citizens' initiative is possible health risks that could arise from radiation exposure. They drew attention to their concerns during signature collections and poster campaigns. The local council had already approved the construction of the mast in 2020, but discussions about the location and the technical conditions dragged on until 2022. The decision for the location at the construction yard was finally confirmed in 2022 and provides for a connection via radio link, which was not without resistance.

Tried and tested and new challenges in mobile communications expansion

The developments in both places show how important mobile communications infrastructure is today. A stable mobile phone connection is essential for both private and business life. In many regions, including Germany, there are still areas without an adequate mobile phone network, which can have fatal consequences in an emergency. The federal government launched a mobile communications funding program in 2021 to counteract this situation and is planning 267 projects to improve mobile phone coverage by the end of 2024.

Increasing demands require a clear strategy and the support of communities. Without the support, it could be difficult to push forward the expansion of mobile communications. The challenges are clear, and in communities like Rhinow and Wolpertswende the controversial issue is increasingly becoming a test for the future of mobile communications coverage in our region.
