Festival Dance Modern Dance delights Chemnitz with international artists!

The Chemnitz Opera House will soon become a venue for dance enthusiasts, as the “Tanz Moderne Tanz” festival will take place there from June 18th to 29th, 2025. Since its founding in 2015, this international festival for contemporary and urban dance has attracted numerous spectators who enjoy being inspired by creative and innovative performances. Festival director Sabrina Sadowska, who is also ballet director at the Chemnitz Theater, has put together a varied program that takes place not only in the usual venues, but also in unusual places in the city.

This year's motto "C the Unseen" was chosen on the occasion of the European Capital of Culture Year and is intended to encourage people to sharpen their awareness of the unusual. The festival aims to lead creatively through public space and is a real treat for anyone who wants to think outside the box. In addition to impressive guest performances, workshops and participatory activities that actively involve the audience are also planned.

Highlights of the festival

Special highlights for the opening are a three-part ballet evening and the performances by the Bavarian Junior Ballet from Munich in the Chemnitz Opera House. Those interested also have the opportunity to take part in a free, two-hour bike tour to get to know the various venues better.

The world record attempt on June 21st will be an extraordinary event. This is about gathering the largest ballet class in the world. At least 1,600 participants are targeted to beat the current record of 1,530. Registration is possible in advance via the festival website.

Cultural diversity and social issues

In order to make the festival particularly lively, a number of international artists are expected for the first time, including dancers from Jamaica and the former cultural capital of Kaunas in Lithuania. Unfortunately, the Israeli Vertigo Dance Company had to cancel their participation at short notice due to the tense political situation in their homeland.

The festival offers a platform that reflects new perspectives in social interaction. A mirror is created for Europe in which unusual encounters take place in places that are often overlooked. It is a festival of movement and inspiration that gives Chemnitz, as the European Capital of Culture, its usual momentum.

The project “Odyssey in C”, inspired by James Joyce’s novel “Ulysses”, premieres on June 26th. Here, visitors will experience short dance performances at various locations, while the grand finale will take place in the opera house. The event promises exciting impressions and extraordinary emotions for everyone involved.

More information about this exciting event can be found on the websites of MDR and Theater Chemnitz. The “Tanztage 2025” in Berlin, which will also present contemporary dance, only underlines the diversity of the dance scene in Germany, as can be read on berlin.de.
